Next up on the Substance Dubai podcast is UK based DJ, Producer, Promoter and co-owner of underground house labels Modifi Music and Modifi Grooves, Boss.

Boss has been on the forefront of the underground electronic music scene for many years. Running Choobe Soundsystem, a club night where it's roots were formed from illegal, free outdoor parties eventually found it's way into the Midlands well respected clubs. The night saw rave reviews in three of the biggest selling dance mags in the world!

Boss then started Lost Disco Project with some like minded friends and once again the night soon spread and was being hosted in Ibiza @ Hush & Eden, whilst booking some of the worlds most credible DJ's & producers.

However, making the music he loves to play is what drives Boss. He runs (with James Vickers), Modifi Music & Modifi Grooves, with a club night that supports the music that these labels promote. With the labels increasing reputation see's the scenes biggest Dj's playing and supporting the music- as well as top radio stations in the world.

Things could be on the up for the tireless workings of Boss whose tracks have been used on mix compilations from house legend Todd Terry and have been supported by Roger Sanchez, Dave Seaman,Giom, Anderson Noise, Terry Francis, The Scum Frog, Inland Knights, Mark Knight, Anil Chawla, Andy Chatterley, Dj Sneak, Anthony Pappa, Onionz, Da Sunlounge, The Littlemen, Matt Bandy and many more.

Modifi Music is a techno and tech-house label based in the UK. Since 2008 Modifi Music have released tracks from artists such as Housewerks, Giash, Hans Bouffemere, Phil Soren, Carlo Astuti and Chris Cooper / Only Ten Left and gaining support form DJs such as Richie Hawtin, Dubfire, James Zabiela, Butch, Markus Schulz, Dave Seaman, Audiojack, Pig & Dan, Kaiser Disco and Dandi & Ugo.

Modifi Grooves is a fresh label that concentrates on the groovier side of life. The label prides itself on finding fresh talent and combing that with the sounds of the experienced producer. With an ever growing support list and remixes coming in from the like of Soul Minority, Death On The Balcony, and future mixes coming from Inland Knights, the label is fast gaining a credible reputation!

Roger Sanchez's label 'Stealth' has just sub- licensed the huge WMC smash Carlo Astuti - The Leave Change But You Don't, and is being featured on his WMC Mix Compilation. So world domination? No, definitely not! But you can count on amazing and high quality music being featured!

Substance presents....Mark Lowry (09/11/10)

Subst@nce favourite Mark Lowry returns to the Subst@nce Dubai podcast almost 1 year after his first podcast episode for us, and his live 4 deck smash up at Dubai's Alpha club.

For those of you who don't know about Mark then allow us to give a brief introduction. Mark is a Newcastle (UK) house legend, resident of Shindig for the past 7 years, and someone who lives and breathes music everyday through the Newcastle based music school ‘Generator’, where he teaches kids to DJ and produce.

Recently, Mark has been adding to his already impressive music CV with remixes of 'Jahaaa' by Hermanez on Steve Lawler's Viva Music imprint and Kruse and Nuernberg's Wiretappeur moniker 'I Want You' on Fresh Meat, both under the guise of Airgroove, his successful collaboration with fellow Geordie Neil Bainbridge, not forgetting his remix of 'In The Dark' by Stan Kolev on Dutchie under his own name.

It clear to see that Mark is a busy boy, but despite all this he still managed to squeeze in getting married (to his lovely wife Jayne), as well as carry on rocking Shindig week in, week out where his next task is warming up for Danny Howells and also former Substance guest Alex Niggeman.

So lets hear it for the devout disciple of the dance music, and all round nice bloke Mr Mark Lowry as he serves up another slice of what he does best - chunky, funky house music from the heart!!

Subst@nce presents....Darren Roach (Electronic Body Movement,UK)
August 16, 2010 09:18 AM PDT

London born and bred Darren Roach has been an integral part of the UK club scene since the halcyon days of ’88. A veteran of London’s clubbin mafia at the age of 15 he was gracing the decks of (then) top London clubs such as MoS, Club UK and The Limelight, quickly gaining recognition amongst his peers as one of the most technically advanced Djs of his generation

After-hour parties and big events have been a main source for Darren's musical output. Captivating a beautiful collection of friends and experiences, from which he embraced and most importantly learnt from. This knowledge would then go on to mould Darren's musical ability as a DJ to work a crowd. Throughout the last 15 years Darren had the pleasure of playing and supporting some of the world’s leading underground DJS and live including Carl Cox, Derek May, Juan Atkins, Kevin Sanderson, Masters at work, Front 242, Carl Craig live,

Darren Roach has travelled the globe and DJ’d at some of the world’ s best clubs and festivals in countries such as America, Australia, China, Russia, Turkey, Croatia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Holland, Ukraine, Belgium, France, Spain, and Sweden playing in events like Dance Valley Amsterdam, Global Tendencies festival San Sebastian, Impulse outdoor festival Holland, Creamfields Istanbul, Taj Mahal Czech republic, The Millennium party in Sydney, DV Amnesia Ibiza, la Cova Barcelona, Sancho Panza(Carnival) Isle of MTV party Croatia and special events like Massive Attacks V.I.P After Party in Istanbul.

In 2002 Darren took on the role as Head of Press and Promotion at Intergroove UK. Plugging and pushing the underground sound to a bigger audience. Labels that broke to the fore purely because of the support that Darren gave them include: Get Physical, Moon Harbour, Morris audio, Connoisseur, Cocoon, Tuning Spork, Immigrant to name but a few...

Also around this time Darren Roach launched the seminal Studiotek Label with various releases to date and with the label gaining not only tremendous reviews and “sureplayers” in magazines such as Mixmag, Muzik, DJ mag, IDJ, DMC update and various internet sites but also support right across the DJ’ing fraternity including Carl Cox, Mr C, Terry Francis, Mazi, Jay Tripwire, Colin Dale, James Zabiela, Layo and Bushwacka, Nathan Coles, Dj Prinz, Ralph Lawson, Dave Mothersole, Tyler Stadius, D'Julz, Ty Tek, Evil Eddie Richards, Pete Heller, Chris Udoh, Dj Linus, Dave Duriez and Francis Harris(Adultnapper) to name a few.

In 2007 Darren Roach launches Electronic Body Movement - EBM - a new special night which has been kicking ass amongst the East London warehouse scene that was followed swiftly by residencies at Egg Club London and 54. With quality DJ line ups that have included some of the best underground DJ’s from across the globe. Artist such as Lee Burridge, Kenny Hawkes, Colin Dale,Pete Herbert (UK). Dan Curtin, Jan Eric Kaiser (Germany). Jerome Sydneham (USA), Raoul Belmans, DJ Prinz (Belgium) Jerome Pacman (France) have graced the decks of EBM.

EBM has gone onto gain out most respect from both the dance music industry and press culminating in September 2007 with a “covermount” mix CD for industry bible DJ Mag.

DJ Mag has described Darren Roach as "the Lord of Groove".....As an artist Darren has always looked for sounds that can only be described as different!!! But, this is where the special talents of Darren really come into play, by bringing in subliminal mixes of different styles and elements based around Electronic house, keeping crowds on their feet, and good feelings inside. Originality and Quality music is the key to Darren Roach's success.

Subst@nce presents..........Djuma Soundsystem
May 09, 2010 09:13 AM PDT
itunes pic

Djuma Soundsystem is Norwegian Mikkas and Danish Lars B who both live in Copenhagen. They first met when they DJ'd at one of Copenhagens longest running club nights, "Offline", and quickly became inseparable friends and later, production partners.
Mikkas and Lars’ production career started in an odd way (considering they now produce cutting edge house and techno music); in 2001 they composed and produced the music for the ballet "Off The Record" for The Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen; a ballet that merged classical music with elements of new electronic music.
The story of Djuma Soundsystem began a couple of years later in 2003, when Mikkas and Lars B decided to make a tune following this dogma: to make an ethnic sounding club banger, that wasn’t commercial or "cheesy" sounding.
Following this, Mikkas and Lars B have remixed, produced and coproduced tracks under many different monikers, such as Ben Horn and Def Jaguar with their main output being as Djuma Soundsystem.
They are signed to the mighty "Get Physical " label from Berlin alongside label mates such as M.A.N.D.Y, Dj T and Booka shade and are the team behind the biggest selling release on Beatport ever, "Les Djinns"; quite some claim to fame given the volume of tunes available through the site.
"Les Djinns" has subsequently been remixed countless times and is currently receiving a reworking by none other than MOBY!!
Aside from their production/studio work, the pair have a relentless schedule of gigs, both dj'ing and live that takes them around the world, and it was whilst they were in Dubai recently for one such date that we got to meet them and hang out; infact they ended up being stranded here due to the Icelandic Volcanic eruption! It was a great pleasure to meet Mikkas and Lars (top geezers in our book) and when they agreed to give us a mix for the Subst@nce Podcast we were extremely happy to oblige by snatching it from them as quickly as we could....Cheers guys!!
Download or stream and enjoy a real deep, melodic musical treat....

Subst@nce presents.... Boogie Box feat Hassan Alwan
February 23, 2010 07:40 AM PST
itunes pic

Baghdad born Hassan Alwan's contribution and experimentation to the world of electronic music began at the age of 17.

While residing in Montreal, Hassan spent two years promoting at the legendary after-hours establishment Stereo.  Learning the ins and outs during his tenure there, Bound4Sound soon followed; an event management group dedicated to pushing the spectrum of techno and house music through different parties and residencies in Montreal's vibrant club scene; most notably at Stereo's offshoot Stereo-bar.

After five eventful years in Montreal, a move to London UK brought a whole different experience, and in 2006 a project named Buy You Sell Me (BYSM) was born.  A net label dedicated to releasing quality music; BYSM also involved the artists and music fans to engage themselves in different charitable causes.

To date, the label has featured the work of Hakan Lidbo, Remute, Quenum, Xpansul, Soul Minority, Sven Brede, Tom Ellis, Someone Else and many more, and has also been gaining support amongst several DJs on the international circuit, including John Tejada, DJ Three, D'Julz, Chris Fortier, and Dirt Crew to name but a few.

Now in Abu Dhabi, Hassan continues to work towards pushing cutting edge dance music.  In 2009, Boogie Box was formed along with Kalamari artist Shadi Megalla.  Boogie Box is rapidly establishing itself as the destination for quality electronic music in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The future looks promising for BYSM, Boogie Box & Hassan. Keep your eyes open and ears cleaned; the best is yet to come!

Hour 1 of Mark's recent 4 deck set for Subst@nce @ Alpha, Dubai. Recorded Live!!!!!!

Subst@nce presents.... Mark Lowry
November 01, 2009 06:41 AM PST
itunes pic

In anticipation of Mark's eagerly awaited debut for Subst@nce in Dubai we are proud to share with you a mix that Mark recorded for us back in September. Proving how adept Mark is behind the decks this mix groove's in all the right places, flowing with a knowledge of how to programme a mix to perfection. A skill that has been refined over the years of being a long standing resident at one of the most globally influential club nights there is. You don’t get to be resident at one of the best loved and longest running nights in the world for no reason…..If you love REAL HOUSE MUSIC, DO NOT MISS THIS!!

In this age of specialized formats and strict genre guidelines among DJ's and producers, what sets Mark apart from his peers is his ability to spin everything from deep house, techno, disco and classics in a set, with a determination of it all making sense. While most DJ's are one-note musicians sticking to a single subgenre of music, one of Shindig!s longest standing residents, Mark Lowry is receiving considerable plaudits for his production talents and DJ skills overlooking the dance floor. Mark laid the foundations of his music career by becoming resident of one of the UK!s Longest and most respected club nights Shindig, almost 8 years ago and while I sit and struggle to think of a world class DJ he hasn!t played along side, Mark will be putting into action another project to put the majority of today!s short sighted “myspace producers” to shame.

Easily surpassing over a decade and a half of active service as one of the North East!s most successful and notably humble DJ!s and producers of electronic music, Mark!s dedication towards production values has landed him gigs and invites up and down the UK at some of the countries best clubs including Turnmills, The End and Global Gathering Festival. Mention the word “Resident” though, amongst Newcastle!s proud cobbled alleys of clubbing and Mark!s reputation will most certainly come up in conversation. Not one to simply fadeinto the background as part of the furniture only to reappear on a Saturday night on cue, Marks versatility to deliver to Shindig!s fiercely loyal crowd with quality house music at night is backed up by the exceptional standard of production coming out of his studio by
day.

Mark has dabbled in deep house, progressive and techno along the way and in the process built up a impressive CV; Past and present studio work covering all angles and including non-dance related teaching projects are a welcome escape and development platform for Mark!s sound, which ranges from club oriented sounds, to soul infected grooves; all seemingly operating on a common notion of melody. In 2008, Mark took his Shindig relationship even further collaborating with Lexicon Avenue!s Scott Bradford and Mark Armstrong under the alias S-Low & Damaged People.

Collaborations and accompanied remix projects, on labels such as UrbanTorque, Saw (Mardel), Movim (Airgroove) and Positiva, have not only gained plenty of support from underground DJ!s, but represent another chapter and slice of Mark!s output, whilst subsequently raising his profile as a name always on the rise. In particular re-workings of Pete Moss and Scope giving a outlook and passion for music, not tethered by style but of consistently layered deep house, never forgetting the important and often overlooked drench of musicality. With no shortage or ideas or goals, Mark enters 2009 with even more
success in his sights.

Subst@nce resi Steve Darley drops Vol 2, spreading more of the soundtrack you are likely to hear at our monthly parties in Dubai. Taking more of a straight up house direction than the deep tech route of Vol 1, there is funk aplenty in this latest mix. These are the tunes that are destroying the Subst@nce dancefloor at present. Subst@nce presents....Alex Niggemann
August 26, 2009 10:00 AM PDT
itunes pic

Dropping straight back in with our next dj mix, Subst@nce proudly presents red hot German dj/producer Alex Niggemann. Smashing dancefloors everywhere he goes, Alex fuses house melodies and techno loops to devastating effect. Already blowing up in 2009, watch him fly in 2010.

Born in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1984, Alex noticed very early on that playing the piano (which he had done passionately for many years) was not the route he would take to make it in the music biz. Since he was a teenager, he was looking for new ways to express himself through music. Initially influenced by his brother´s taste he visited his first techno party, life has never been the same since.

At the tender age of 16 he knew which direction his future would take. He acquired his first turntables and mixer then converted his room into a provisional DJ studio. Very soon he started down the path of electronic music production. While this transformation was taking place he DJ'd under different aliases in several clubs in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area.

After his high-school graduation in 2005 he moved to Berlin to study audio engineering and refine his knowledge in music production. After some successful networking further DJ appearances in clubs all over Germany followed, this time under his real name Alex Niggemann. Soon, his first commercial release, a remix of Booka Shade's awesome 'Darko'
(Get Physical Music 2006) was subsequently released to great acclaim.

After completion of his studies in 2007 he concentrated on his music full time. In 2008, he had releases on labels such as Meerestief, Micro.fon and Moonpool, to name just a few. By the middle of 2008 he was snapped up by 'Supernature Records' the label run by British duo 'Audiofly'. His Black Rose EP was released in the spring of 2009 with more in the pipeline.
Further releases on 'Be Chosen' and Nick Curly's '8-bit' label will follow in 2009. Also remixes for Supernature and Thomas Schumacher, EPs for Supernature, 8bit and 2020Vision Recordings are fixed for the second half of 2009.
